Seasonal Wardrobe

Seasonal Inspiration October-December 2019

The crisp, cool days of the Fall season brings about the beginning of soft and cozy fabrics, warm colors reminiscent of the changing color of leaves and styles that transition from warmer days to brisk evenings. It is a favorite among many, so we’ve compiled some inspiration to help you figure out what you most want to make this year. You’ll find information about fabric, color scheme ideas, early patterns releases and some inspiration straight from the talented sewists in House of Curves Hangout.

Boucle is a woven fabric made from thick and thin yarns that have loops and curls creating a textured feel. Great for high end jackets, dresses and skirts.
Cable Knit is a sweater knit that is weft knitted with cable stitches, creating a heavier, thicker fabric. It is more decorative, and makes for great chunky sweaters or sweatshirts.
Coating is a heavyweight woven fabric normally made from wool fibers. Great for…coats!
Corduroy is a woven fabric made of cords, called wales, running with the selvedge and featuring a directional nap. There are lightweight and medium-heavy varieties. The size of the wales can vary in width. Make pants, jackets, pinafores, dresses.
French Terry is a knitted fabric that features loops and soft piles of yarn on one side and a smooth, soft surface on the other side. A favorite for sweatshirts and lounge pants.
Jacquard and Brocade fabrics are textured fabrics with designs woven into the fabric with threads, some may be metallic. The drape may vary and is used mainly in formalwear.

Ribbed Knit is another fabric with raised rows, but made from knitted material. Great for shirts and dresses, as well as for collars, cuffs and bands.
Stretch Velvet is a knit fabric with a smooth back and a textured velvet front. It is soft and shiny, great for costumes, dancewear, formalwear, dresses, pants and more. Stretch velvet has a nap direction so make sure to cut all pieces in the same direction.
Waffle Knit has small, square grids reminiscent of the breakfast food; it is a lightweight, breathable and absorbent textured knit fabric. Shirts, sweaters and dresses make a great feature for waffle knits.
Wool is made from the hair of different types of animals, often sheep. The hair is sheared and turned into yarn which is then woven on a loom to create fabric. Types of fabric made from wool include broadcloth, gabardine, herringbone, houndstooth and tweed. You can use these to make coats, jackets, skirts, dresses and suits.
