Hi Friends! Amanda here and today I’m going to do a pattern review on the recently size expanded Forte Top & Dress from Love Notions Patterns. I was able to be a part of the testing team and wanted to be able to give my feedback on the experience. Here we go!
Designer: Love Notions Sewing Patterns
Size Range: XS-5X (Max 61″ Hips)
Pattern Name: Forte Top & Dress
Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner
Garment Type: Shirt or Dress
Fabric Type: The pattern recommends light to medium-weight knits with at least 25% stretch and good drape such as jersey spandex, ITY and polyester blends.
View and Size You Made: View B; 3X with FBA graded to 4X hips
Adjustments: I didn’t make any adjustments because this pattern included full bust adjustment pieces. Hurrah for built-in FBA patter pieces!!
Fabric Used: I used rayon spandex from Simply By Ti for my version I’m sharing today. I have used velvet in the past with success as well.
Type of Machine(s) Used: I used my Brother SE-400 sewing machine for the gathers, and my Janome 7933 serger for all of the seams.
Did you hack the pattern in any way? If yes, explain.
No. Honestly, there are so many views and different variations that come with this pattern that it would take some serious effort to hack this baby. There’s already a ton of options!
How were the instructions, construction and/or pattern package?
The instructions were pretty thorough and very easy to follow. They are super straight forward and loaded with helpful tips along the way. I didn’t have to reference them this time because I’ve made this version three times before.
Do you like the fit? I LOVE the fit on View B for my two month postpartum body. It’s forgiving without being overly big and swallowing me. Using the rayon spandex was helpful to skim over my belly. I loved that the gathered part was actually gathered enough for the gathers to show. I’ve made other patterns with gathers that weren’t very gathered once attached.
Did you make a muslin? Yes, since I have changed sizes postpartum I did make a test version B before cutting into my final fabric.
Would you make this pattern again? Oh, for sure! I want to make view D with bell sleeves next!
What was your favorite part of the project? Okay, but what didn’t I love?! Although the pattern is at least a year old, it’s still on trend. I love that I can make something comfortable, with nursing access (pull down from neckband), and feel like I’m still put together. This was a great sewing palate cleanser for me because I can put it together without looking at the instructions and it goes together in about an hour. It’s perfect for fitting in some self care sewing during nap time. I also really loved that I was able to be a part of the size expansion. It means a lot to have even more options available to the plus size community. It made me happy to work with Tami and know she was actively listening and taking our feedback.
10/10 would recommend and will definitely be making again.
