Break The Rules

#BTRSwim Fabric Shop Suggestions

Hello, loves! Obviously we can’t expect y’all to jump in without knowing what supplies to use first. This info I’ve come up with is all from personal experience of making swimsuits for the past two years. It’s definitely not the end all be all, but these are the companies I have first hand experience with ordering their products or have friends that have ordered from them. Be aware that most of these companies are USA based. Libelle Sewing and Blackbird Fabrics are both Canadian based, but do ship USPS for their US customers. If you have more to add, please feel free to tell us in the comments, especially our international people. We love hearing from y’all!

It’s all in the details…

Swimwear fabric goes by many names. You will hear swim fabric referred as Tricot, Nylon Spandex, Poly Spandex, Yoga Swim Spandex, and just plain swim. When making swimwear you want to stay away from natural fabrics such as cotton and use synthetics like nylon and polyester. You will need to use a synthetic blend with either Lycra or spandex. I prefer a higher Lycra/spandex content in my swim fabrics like 20%, but that doesn’t mean a 15% lycra content is a bad. Swimwear fabric will vary from supplier to supplier. As far as content goes, I prefer Nylon over Polyester. It’s softer and has a better feel to me, personally. Another thing to look for is stretch. You need four way stretch when purchasing swim fabric. The weight of the fabric is the last factor you will need to pay attention to when ordering online. I prefer to use only 180-220 GSM weights. Anything lighter than those will be more suitable for lingerie. Truthfully, ordering fabric online is always a trial and error process. You will learn these things along the way, and you’ll find your own favorites!

Now on to the fun part, shopping! Below is a list of my tried and true swim fabric suppliers. Again, this isn’t the end all be all of swim suppliers! There are certainly more out there, especially in the custom fabric world.

Thank you for reading and make sure to check out the swim findings post next!

Disclaimer, I am a strike off sewist for them, but Sew Fit Fabrics also has amazing swim fabric. The host is a dancer and dance mom, and she runs specifically athletic leaning fabrics. Currently her bases are swim, supplex, and a new poly spandex that’s kind of like supplex and swim had a fabric baby together lol I have some rainbow dragon scales swim from her and it’s really nice.
